Why does my dog have white discharge around his eye? Is it serious?

I just saw that my dog’s eye has white stuff around it and I’ve never seen this before on him. Is this an indication of anything?

    I would keep an eye on Watson's eye, but at this point I would not worry too much. You can always clean his eye out with saline. If his eye becomes red, irritated or the discharge gets worse then I recommend taking Watson to a veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I am sorry to hear about Marshall! If it is just one eye, I worry that it could be a corneal ulcer or scratch. ThIs is especially true If Marshall is squinting that eye a lot. It could be a conjunctivitis (inflammation of the tissues around the eyeball) caused by allergy or irritant. This usually affects both eyes. The good news is that even if it’s an infection, it is NOT transmissible to humans. Do see your vet to get the proper eye medication. If Marshall is rubbing his face on the carpet/furniture or scratching at the eye, put him in an E-collar as soon as possible until you can get to the vet. The vet may recommend staining the eye to look for scratches or ulcers or to be sure that giving a steroid medication is safe. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Marshall!

What is this under/near my 10yr old Bichon's left eye? What can I do to remedy this for him? It's been like this for a few days.
Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. This looks like a serious infection of the skin due to the matting of the eye discharge under the eye. Honestly, he will probably need oral antibiotics to clear this up so I really recommend you take him to a vet for an exam. Especially if the discharge from the eye has increased. In the meantime while waiting for an appointment you can use this eye gel in the eye AND on that raw spot, 3 - 4 times per day. You must be extremely careful with what type of products you use around the eye and many human eye medications are not appropriate to use in animals. My dog has some white goopy build up in 1 eye and it looks a bit red.
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. White goopy stuff by the eye can be just extra fluid from the eye if the eye is irritated, or the first sign of an infected eye. Yellow/green goop means bacteria and infection. If the eye is red, and if Penny is squinting or seems sore, then I recommend a visit to the vet. Eyes get either better, or much worse, very quickly. If Penny isn't not squinting and the eye is only a little bit red, you can try just natural tears for people (no medications, just eye lubrication), 6 times a day and see if it is better tomorrow. If it gets any worse at all, please see a vet right away, or if the discharge becomes yellow/green. Best of luck with Penny!

My dog has discharge in his eye
It's a little hard to see Cooper's eye in that picture. Usually discharge from just one eye can indicate a scratch on the cornea, an eye infection, uveitis, or a blocked tear duct. If he is squinting the eye, sensitive to light, tearing heavily or has any redness to the eye then he should be examined as soon as possible as this could be a scratch on the cornea or uveitis that needs to be addressed right away. Yellow or greenish discharge may indicate an infection and Cooper should be examined to decide if he needs eye drops. If it seems like everything else is normal and the discharge is mild and white in color this could be related to a blocked tear duct. In this case You can try using a sterile saline eye wash to flush his eye. However if the problem does not resolve in a day or two it would be best to have him checked out by your veterinarian. Hi, my dog Lilly has a weird bump on her eye lid. She's had it since birth. It almost looks like a big stye, but I could be wrong. It has discharge coming out and her eye is very irritated. I dont know what to do. Help!

I would recommend having Lilly examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This may be a cyst or mass on the eyelid that may need to be removed. This mass / cyst may be causing irritation to the eye and if it is not addressed it may cause trauma to the cornea of the eye due to constant irritation. My dog has eye burgers daily in morning and in white of his eyes look haze or brown kind off is this pink eye or something else?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Mikey! The discharge doesn't look yellow or green so I do not think it is infected...yet. If this is more discharge than he Mikey normally has it could be allergies or the start of a bacterial conjunctivitis or pink eye. Especially if he goes to dog parks or doggie day care. I would make an appointment with your Vet for an evaluation. If warranted they may prescribe an ocular antibiotic drop or ointment. I hope this helps and I wish Mikey a speedy recovery!

Possibly an eye infection that started in one dog and has now spread to two other dogs. Have a yellowish brown mucus discharge coming out. Red around the eye

I recommend that you have them evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. My Adult German Short Hair Pointer keeps getting Mucus like discharge in His Eyes after sleeping, I tried Terramycin Ointment applied a couple Times a Day but that doesn’t seem to be helping much!? Any recommendations?
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. The discharge you are seeing may also be due to dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and could also be an allergy. I would recommend having Tibo examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having a Schirmer Tear Test done to rule out dry eye as a cause. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. My 6 month year old jack russell has clear discharge coming from his eyes
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions.
