Why does my dog have white discharge around his eye? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 57 lbs

I just saw that my dog’s eye has white stuff around it and I’ve never seen this before on him. Is this an indication of anything?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, Marshall may have a bacterial eye infection or allergies. I recommend making an appointment if the discharge persists. I hope this helps and I wish Marshall the best!

I would keep an eye on Watson's eye, but at this point I would not worry too much. You can always clean his eye out with saline. If his eye becomes red, irritated or the discharge gets worse then I recommend taking Watson to a veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
