My obese dog gets mean on diet. What are affordable food options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | 6 years and 10 months old | 94 lbs

We have a fixed Obese German Shepard / Lab mix. We have tried to put her on a diet but she gets really really mean. To the point that she will attack our cats and even go after our feet. We don't have the money to pay for the real expensive diet dog food. What if anything can we do

If Science Diet Metabolic is too expensive then I would recommend gradually transitioning Kia to a weight loss or low-calorie food. I would not decrease the amount you are feeding her. If you just switch her diet to a weight loss food the number of calories should be less then what a regular food is. Always check the bag to make sure. I would then at a green bean or two to her food just to give her some fiber to full her up. I would make sure that no one is feeding her any treats or human food.
