My dog's toe growth is getting bigger and bleeding. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 11 days old | 65 lbs

My dog has a growth on his toe, that keeps getting larger and larger and bleeds a lot. The vet said it would go away and that it is normal in young labs but it just keeps growing. it does not look like what’s she told us it was. I just want to know what to do about getting it take care of, I am afraid it’s something serious but the vet didn’t seem concerned.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Judging from the mass and the fact that Gunner is a young dog, I would suspect that this is what we call a histiocytoma. These typically resolve on their own but can be surgically removed to help speed up the resolution of the mass. If it is continuing to grow and if it bothers him, I would recommend having this removed surgically and then send it out for further testing to make sure this is not a cancerous mass. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
