Nursing dog with watery eyes/nose: Is Azithromycin safe to use?

My dog weighing 26 kgs is having watery discharge from her eyes and nose as well. She is nursing her 17 days old puppies. What dose of Azithromycin is suggested?

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to give the dose information for any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for Laila. Finally, the safety of using Azithromycin in nursing dogs has not been determined, so I would not recommend using it in her. It is never say to try to treat your dog yourself, as you could accidentally give a medication that is harmful to her or inappropriate to use. I would take her and her puppies into the vet today for an exam and treatment. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately, no, doxycycline is not a good choice for antibiotics in a nursing mamma dog. First, it does not have the spectrum of antibacterial activity needed for most mammary gland infections. This means that it may not clear up the infection entirely or be effective against the organisms causing the infection at all. Secondly, this is a drug that needs to be avoided in nursing moms because of potential side effects it can have in young puppies. This drug is not safe in neonates and can cause problems with the teeth in these young pups. I would recommend taking your momma dog to the vet to be examined and to get an antibiotic that is safe for her and the pups. In the meantime, until you can get to the vet, try using warm compresses and massage on the affected glands if your dog will tolerate it. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Azithromycin is an antibiotic. We commonly prescribe it for upper respiratory infections or infectious coughs. I have used it to speed up the regression of viral papillomas. The medication is once daily and should be given with food. I would give her no more than 0.50 mls once daily. I hope this helps!

My dog was prescribed Azithromycin 250 mg. Is this dose too much for a 43 lb puppy
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Binnie. You can give a dog up to 5mg per pound of body weight as a dose, which is 215mg. This is a little above, but it should be fine. I would not worry. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. From the picture you have provided I would suspect that Lolo and the other pups have an upper respiratory infection with that eye discharge being present. I would recommend having them seen by a veterinarian as I would not recommend giving a human product without the consent of your veterinarian due to appropriate dosing. I would recommend starting them on Clavamox, which has a different concentration for animals. This will need to be prescribed by your veterinarian once the puppies are examined. My dog has a lot of ear problems infection and allergies. I bought 250 amoxicillin today in Mexico because its what my vet in Alabama gives her but i can't remember how much to give her. I'm also giving her zymox otic ear drops.

Hello. I would be a little concerned as to why a puppy this young could come down with a cold. The immunity a puppy gets from its mother usually remains very high until it begins to wane around 8 weeks of age. That is why we start puppy vaccinations at this time. My best advice is to have the puppy examined within a day or so of you obtaining possession. I am not concerned about the Zithromax as this is usually well tolerated, but I would like you to make sure the puppy's heart & lungs sound normal. If everything checks out fine, then the respiratory infection should have no impact on the overall health & growth of your puppy. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Indra! Indra needs to be examined by a Vet. She could have a conjunctivitis, uveitis, scratches on her eyes and a fever since she is lethargic. Just because she is pregnant doesn't mean there aren't safe medications to give her. Antibiotic eye drops are safe as are some oral antibiotics. I am so sorry to hear that Isabeau is experiencing the green discharge problems with her eye. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Her to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Isabeau to scratch or rub her eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly in dogs I would have her examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort. For example if a corneal ulcer is present in addition to an infection. This is an especially important point while Isabeau is pregnant, and vetroplolycin may not be the appropriate medication for the p

there have been no accurate studies that have been performed regarding the safety of Clavamox in lactating female dogs, but on the other hand there is also no evidence that there is any significant risk in this sort of situation. in general it is considered safe and many vets prescribe Clavamox to lactating dogs.

How much amoxicillin should be given to a nursing 4lb dog for metastasis?
The dose of amoxicillin for dogs that is typically recommended is 20 milligrams per kilo of body weight every 12 hours. If you mean "mastitis," I would advise you that amoxicillin is not a great choice for this condition. Mastitis should be treated with more broad spectrum antibiotics, such as Baytril or Clavamox. It's also quite a painful condition, and needs pain medications that are safe to use in nursing bitches. Please consult your veterinarian for a full exam of Caramel as well as prescription of appropriate medications; this is not a condition that can be treated at home.
