Guinea pigs clicking teeth when introduced: Are they fighting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 2.4 lbs

This is a follow up question to my last regarding when my guinea pig's can start being kept in the same cage. We have gotten our second guinea pig a couple if days ago and his is the father of the one we already had. He is a pound larger and they have been doing fine together when I would let them roam around the living room. This morning I put Gino in the play pen with Bubu, where I had been keeping him. A couple seconds after I did that BuBu started clicking his teeth together. Gump too.

Hi again! It is not unusual for two guinea pigs to be a bit agitated by each other at the beginning, while they work out a hierarchy. I would suggest supervising them for now while they are together. If you notice the clicking again, I would separate them and try again another time. Try feeding them together, and offer them treats together so that they can start to associate some positive interactions with each other. I hope this helps, and that your boys start getting along soon!
