My dog growls at her tail and attacks herself. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Plott | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 25 lbs

My dog is about a year old and is plott hound/Rottweiler or pit bull?! And every time she is fed or if she has a toy she growls at her tail and or foot and she is serious, but she attacks herself! Please help me figure out what is wrong with my dog. She is very very smart and I also have a video of her acting like that if you need it.

This is a rare occurrence, but can be very dangerous to herself and others of the aggression starts to become more evolved. I have had a few patients with this behavior disorder and they did improve somewhat on anxiety medications, but in time they both got worse and would severely injure themselves. I would highly encourage you to see a veterinary behavior specialist. Please contact your veterinarian for a recommendation for one in your area. I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I know it is so very stressful. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
