Best low-maintenance small pet for a student home alone during school?

Hello, I am a 16 year old boy looking for a pet. I am willing to buy anything it requires and to look after it to my best abilities. I am wanting to become a vet in the future. I am looking for a low maintenance pet, not too big, small would be preferable. Also, a pet that would be okay with me being out while I am at school. Have you got any suggestions? Thank you, Jack

Hi Jack! I would recommend a pocket pet such as a guinea pig or a hamster. They are relatively low maintenance (you will have to change their cage regularly as well as feed and give water to daily), but are fine with being alone while you are at school. They are also great pets to have, I had a hamster growing up named Alvin and he was really cool. Good luck with becoming a vet in the future!

Have you considered a guinea pig? Guinea pigs are relatively affordable pets and are considered a good companions and social. But, bear in mind that guinea pigs do best when paired with another guinea pig of the same sex, which can increase your costs. I want a pet bird but I have NO space!! I want one of those gothic hanging cages…would one of those work? What’s a bird that’s low maintenance (I’m not good at cleaning cages) I also want one with a not super long life span.
Birds can be fun pets to have around the house, but I have to say that they are all high-maintenance. They require daily feeding, cleaning bathing and appropriate enrichment in order to keep them happy and healthy. If this is not provided, then you may end up with a miserable/sickly bird with no feathers. Vet bills can be very expensive when birds get sick, because there are limited veterinarians that are knowledgable and skilled with avian medicine. Providing as much space as possible is best for a bird. I think I have an idea of the type of cage you want, but this is not a very suitable cage for anything other than a small bird (tend to have shorter life-spans than bigger birds). Even then it's quite small for a bird, because birds are born with the expectation of having unlimited space. You will also have to consider the noise. If your place is small, then I'd assume you have close neighbors. Birds are generally very noisy and can easily make some enemies in close quar

I'm considering getting a small pet varying from a hamster to a ferret and I was wondering how safe it would be for them to take car rides since I'm at my mom's half the week and my dad's the other half and whether them constantly being in two differ
This could be stressful to some pets, depending on their personality. I would suspect a prey-species such as a hamster would be more affected by the constant movement/change of scenery just because they may be more alert/aware of their surroundings. Whatever pet you decide to get, you will need an appropriate travel carrier to be sure the pet doesn't get loose in your car. Or even better, if your car is large enough to move the cage between the two households this may be easier on your pets so that the actual cage itself isn't changing regularly. Covering the cage with a dark sheet can be calming for some pets during travel, so they aren't alarmed by the light/noise on the trip.

Adult dogs can generally be crated 8-10 hours so this schedule could be fine provided the dog does not having anxiety issues....etc. Dogs do require A LOT of time. It's almost like having a child. They require at least an hour of exercise every day (especially when they are young). They require training and affection. They need to be fed on a schedule, let out on a schedule and you will need to have them examined periodically by the veterinarian. Having a dog is very rewarding but it sounds like now is maybe not the right time to have a dog if you family is very busy. I recommend to wait until the time is right. There are pets who can be equally rewarding but require less care than a dogs. Cats make great pets and are far less dependent on humans. Though they still require attention...etc. Many people are grossed out about rats but pet rats actually make very good pets. I am getting a 10 year old a hamster for xmas, but which breed is the best suited? She would love to handle them sometimes, and am wanting to get her a Russian dwarf but know that Syrians are a lot easier to tame.
The Syrian, or Teddy Bear, hamster would be the best choice for first pet. Allow the hamster to settle in for a few days then gradually acclimate him/her to being pet or handled. Always use praise and rewards after each session.

I would recommend buying a cage with plenty of room for Daisy and Stella to move around. If they are new additions to the house I would take them to a vet for a good exam to make sure they are healthy. At local pet stores they sell bedding and food for guinea pigs. I recommend handling them often which helps make them friendly and become a good pet

Hi! Hamsters can make great pets if they are socialized and handled gently. A standard hamster cage with a wheel, tunnels, a hide box, some soft bedding in which to burrow (like carefresh), fresh food and water are the basic needs of any pet hamster. If you want, you can add a network of tunnels to provide more exercise and enrichment opportunities. Hamsters can get sick and should only be fed hamster specific food items to decrease the chances of tooth and gastrointestinal problems. It’s also a good idea to take your new pet to the vet shortly after you get them so you have a baseline of health and have an established relationship with a vet in the event your hamster does become ill. Trying to find a small pet that can roam around a room safely probably not a ferret because I have a hamster in the same room could a guinea pig or rabbit be Free roamed in the room or is there any other pets that could thank you
A rabbit may be let out to roam. They are easily litterbox trained as well. You would need to fully "rabbit proof" the room though. This would entail keeping all wires, and anything else that could cause harm if chewed, out of reach.

I am pet sitting for a friends hamster soon and Im going away with out the hamster for 3 days worried about being cold. Is there somethingthatcanhelp?
If the hamster is indoors and the heating will go on , there is no such risk. Remember they have their fur to help them keep warm. I had a few hamsters who suffered heat stroke, so I would also be careful not to overheat him. Make sure that he has enough food and water , and that the water can not be spilled. Maybe it would be sensible for someone just to pop in once a day to make sure that he is fine, it is always a big responsibility to look after someone else's pet !

I have a Syrian shorthaired femail and my whole family is going on a trip to Chicago how will I feed her?
She is very cute! If you are only going to be home a few days, you can generally fill the water bottle and leave plenty of food. If it’s going to be more than 3 days, see if a friend can either take her to their home or come over to yours. There is a website called Rover.com that can connect you with pet sitters as well.
