Senior dog with CHF, bloody urine, vomiting. Is it heart or poison?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

My senior chihuahua has congestive heart failure and she’s also injested rat poison twice of which she almost died from. Throughout the night, I discovered this morning, that she threw up, has blood in her urine and had soft bowel movement with mucus in it. She’s been coughing a lot despite being on her medication for congestive heart failure. Could the blood be a complication of her heart or poisoning?

I'm very sorry to hear that Zoe is sick! Congestive heart failure can certainly cause coughing, which generally gets worse over time even with medication, but it would not cause bloody urine, vomiting, or soft stool. Rat poison ingestion could potentially cause these symptoms, but so could many other things. Regardles, since it sounds like something is definitely wrong, I would recommend taking Zoe to an emergency vet today to be seen. He/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.
