Why can't my cat meow, only squeak and snore? Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 years and 1 month old | 7 lbs

My cat Lily has never been able to vocalize. She tries to meow but nothing comes out. If she puts a lot of effort behind it she might squeak a little. She snores loudly when she sleeps. I don't know if I should worry, if I should pay the $1000 the vet wants for diagnostic testing? Please help me...

Poor Lily! If she has always been like this then I would not be that concerned. I have seen cats that aren't capable of vocalizing or make more of a "squeak" than a "meow" since they were kittens and they have been fine. If she is doing anything else that is new or concerning, then I would consider having some diagnostics done. I hope this helps!
