My Great Dane is lethargic, no poop, but eating. Bloat or obstruction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 121 lbs

My Great Dane has been eating and drinking as normal. He has been sleeping all day though and has not had a bowel movement in over 24 hours. He is on a schedule so this is very unusual. I have to drag him out of bed to eat, but he has not been vomiting. Should I be worried about bloat/torsion or a bowel obstruction?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Not necessarily. Usually signs of gastric dilatation and volvulus or torsion include retching, extreme lethargy, collapse, pale gums, distended abdomen and inappetence and with an obstruction vomiting is very common. While this is possible, it is unlikely based on what you have described. He could be experiencing inappetence due to conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Enzo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment if this does not improve in the next 24 hours. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
