My dog ate a chicken bone. Should I give him Vaseline and bread?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 93 lbs

Dog ate chicken bone and swallowed it whole it was like half of a wing and I gave him Vaseline on bread. Vet told me.to.do that she he swallowed a rock whole. But another vet told me on here not to.do it. It suppose to live to help it pass and I also found this on a vet page To help I recommend starting with a vaseline sandwich. Take a slice of whole wheat bread, slather with vaseline as you would peanut butter on a slice of bread, cover with a second slice. Feed it to him piece by piece

The theory behind the bread is you are hoping it will stick to outside of the bones to protect the intestines from getting poked and make it smoother to pass. This is a theory and may or may not work. Some dogs can pass bones with out bread or anything. It depends on the dogs digestive tract, how many pieces the bones are in, and how big the dogs is. It may cause bloody diarrhea when passing through the colon. I would just monitor him from here and if you notice vomiting or bloody diarrhea then take him to your vet.
