My dog has kidney failure. Are watery eyes normal after IV fluids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 13 years and 11 months old | 5.4 lbs

Hi. My dog is in end stage Kidney failure. He spent 3 days at the emergency hospital getting IV fluids. When I picked him up one of his eyes was very watery. I asked the vet tech and they said sometimes they lubricate them in the hospital. Now both his eyes are very watery. I'm wondering if this is normal for end stage kidney failure or if he may have something else going on now as well. He's on meds for his tummy (metronidazole).

Hello, sorry to hear about Memi. I would concerned that there may be something else going on with his eyes that is separate from his kidney disease. If he is very dehydrated, it could be possible that his tear film is very poor and he may need topical lubricants, but I would also recommend ruling out superficial corneal ulcers and inflammation of his eye. If Memi develops any squinting, worsening discharge, eye pain, or redness then he should be evaluated immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.
