My puppy ate a Hershey's Kiss (chocolate & wrapper). What should I do?

Hello, My puppy just ate a Hershey’s kiss (chocolate and wrapper)! He’s 13 lbs. Can we/do we need to do anything?

Well that wasn't good of Winston to eat that Hershey's kiss! The good news is that one is not likely to cause any problems. It's very small and doesn't contain enough chocolate to cause any toxic symptoms. He should be fine, so I wouldn't do anything for him except monitor him to be safe. You potentially could see some mild GI upset, but otherwise he should be fine. Keep him away from the kisses in the future! Thanks for contacting Pet Coach!

    Given the same size of the Hershey kiss and the fact there isn't a lot of chocolate in it, I would not be worried about Chloe. There will likely be no reaction to that amount of chocolate, and she should be fine :-)

There's no need to panic! One milk chocolate Hershey's kiss does not contain nearly enough caffeine and theobromine to cause any significant problems for Maze. At the worst, she may experience a little bit of stomach upset with vomiting and diarrhea in a day or two. Had she eaten baker's chocolate, cocoa powder, or very dark chocolate, I'd be very concerned, as the caffeine and theobromine in these types of chocolate can cause cardiac and neurologic issues. After this tiny amount of milk chocolate, there's nothing you need to do!

I have a small puppy and he just ate 2 kiss chocolates, should I take him to the vet? He weighs about 12 lb.
Fortunately that is not enough chocolate to be of a toxic dose in Goofy. It may upset his stomach though and cause vomiting or diarrhea over the next 24 hours though. You can monitor for any changes or symptoms then seek a vet if needed.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Louie! One Hershey kiss weighs about 4.46 grams so 20 is about 89.2 grams of milk chocolate. For Louie that is a toxic dose where vomiting and diarrhea will occur. Since he is vomiting he should be seen by your Vet for an exam, anti-nausea medications and fluids today. If he is having diarrhea they can provide medications to help with that. Once the vomiting stops he should be fed a bland diet for 3-7 days. You can purchase a diet from your Vet or cook for him by boiling chicken or hamburger and combining it with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. I wish Louie the best!

I would highly recommend contacting the Aspca pet Poison hotline or pet Poison helpline to determine the next best steps towards her care. http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/ They will need the exact amount ingested (usually in ounces or grams) and the time that she ingested it, in order to give you a good recommendation moving forward. It does matter that it is white chocolate - fortunately white chocolate is not toxic! It could cause some mild stomach upset so if Xina vomits or develops diarrhea I’d recommend seeing your vet. Otherwise no treatment is required.

My dog ate about 12 Hershey kisses with the wrappers on, about 2 days ago. He’s been pooping and vomiting up the wrappers. I am wondering if this will cause long term damage to him?
Chocolate toxicity can cause a significant amount of GI upset (vomiting and diarrhea), but does not tend to cause long term problems unless the dose was high enough to cause seizures. The foil wrappers should not cause a problem unless there is enough foil to cause an obstruction in the GI tract. If the vomiting and diarrhea is still continuing three days later, it would be worth having your vet examine Louie and give him some medication to help him feel better. Good luck! My dog ate A half or possibly one and a half Hershey bars. She is a wheaten terrior and is about 45 pounds. Will she be ok? What should I do?
A Hershey bar weighs 1.55 ounces, so let's say all of the is chocolate (I'm assuming you're talking about a milk chocolate Hershey bar). If she ate one and a half of them, that would be between 2 and 3 ounces of chocolate. According to my chocolate toxicity calculator, she should be OK with this dose. You might see some mild GI upset, such as vomiting and diarrhea. I would withhold food for several hours to see how she does, and take her to the vet if you see any stomach upset. I have seen one or two dogs who were exceptionally sensitive to even small amounts of chocolate, although this is rare. If you want to be completely safe you are within a good window of time to take her to your vet's and have vomiting induced.

18 pound, 8 year old apple head Chihuahua, in good health except overweight, Ltd on all shots, ate a small, snack size mint Kit Kat bar. With wafers and mint i figure at most 1 ounce of dark, sweet chocolate or less.

Ozzie is such a beautiful girl, but she was very naughty to eat all that candy! Luckily Kit Kats and Hershey kisses do not contain a lot of chocolate, and with her weight and the amount she ate, she likely did not consume enough to cause a severe toxic reaction. You could see a mild reaction including vomiting, diarrhea, increased urination, and increased heart rate. If you do see the GI signs I mentioned, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Now sometimes dogs will react differently to chocolate, and a smaller amount can cause a more severe reaction. Watch for muscle tremors, seizures, and a racing heart r

The diarrhea did the job it was meant to do, your dog got rid of the foil and almond. It is not clear whether the diarrhea was caused by the foreign body (ie the foil) or the chocolate. One Hershey kiss should not be toxic enough to cause a serious problem. Take your dog (is her name really "Chocolate"? What irony ;-)) off food for about 12 hrs, then feed bland food such as boiled rice with boiled white chicken meat in small quantities over several feeds a day,. Do this for a day, then start replacing small quantities of rice with her normal food over the next two days until she is at the normal quantity of her regular food. If the diarrhea does not go away by the end of the third day, or if she is lethargic and dehydrated,you will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for an exam.
