My cat won't eat due to painful mouth sores. Is there a numbing agent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 7 lbs

There is a foster cat of mine, she is an adult maybe 5 to 6 years old. She won't eat beecause her mouth is full of painful sores that are bleeding. She also has a terrible nose bleed. She is on antibiotics and SQ fluids and I'm instructed to syringe feed her but it causes her considerable pain. Is there any sort of topical numbing agent that a vet can prescribe? We have a Shelter vet but I'm just wondering if there even is such a medicine?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Unfortunately there is no topical numbing oral solution for cats that I know of but something such as Sucralfate may help alleviate the ulcerations inside of the mouth. I would discuss this with a veterinarian as you will need a prescription to get Sucralfate. If she has stomatitis, she may need to have all of her teeth removed to help resolve this problem. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
