What food and how much for my small 8-week-old puppy to grow?

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Kelpie | Female | 1 month and 22 days old | 5 lbs

I have just bought a 8 week old puppy. She was six weeks old when she was taken away from her mother and she is really small for a Kelpie cross staffy. I don't know what kind of food or how much food I should give her to help her grow. Please help

Nala is very cute! She needs a puppy formulated food, and brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Puppies require higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than adult dogs to grow properly, and a puppy formulated food will provide that for her. Go out to a pet store and get a puppy food for her now. She should be fed three times a day until she is six months once, once in the morning, at noon, and the evening. The bag of food will tell you her daily recommended allotment of food, and divide that into three equal feedings. Once she is six months old, she can be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Good luck, I hope this helps!

If Nala is doing well on the Purina, there's no need to change her food, but if you wanted to try another brand, I recommend Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. Should you make the decision to switch her food, be sure to do it slowly to avoid GI upset. Mix together the old food and new food, and over the course of two weeks, slowly increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until Nala is eating the new food only.

Great question! At almost two months of age, Ooge is old enough to be fed a puppy formulated food. It has to be a puppy formulated food because puppies require higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than an adult dog. A puppy food will provide everything he needs to grow properly. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. On the bag, there is a daily recommended amount of food, and I would divide that into three equal portions to feed him three times a day, once in the morning, noon, and evening. Once he turns six months old, he can be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I hope this helps :-)

People food and veggies are fine as a treat in moderation, however Nala Jai should be on a balanced puppy diet at this point in time to help her grow and stay healthy. Several brands are available that are great such as Science Diet, Purina, Eukanuba, etc, and many offer puppy formulations specific to your dog's breed, age, and size. Fresh veggies such as a piece of carrot, broccoli or some lean chicken are all great as treats, but should be used in moderation and not as the primary diet.

Hello and cute picture! For an 8 week old small breed puppy, I would recommend a small breed puppy food. Royal Canin, Science Diet, Wellness Brand, and Blue Buffalo make good choices, however there are a variety of options out there. I hope you find a food she will really like. The important thing to remember is to have Cali on a puppy food until she is about 9 months to a year old. You can then transition to adult food after that.

Any food that has an AAFCO certification label on the bag has been tested to be well balanced. And any food that is labeled for puppies is designed to support growth. So I would go with a small breed, puppy dog food with an AAFCO label. I really like the following brands: Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Evo, and Eukanuba. Best wishes taking care of your new puppy. And don't forget that vaccinations usually start around 8 weeks of age, so schedule an appt with your veterinarian soon if you haven't done so already. I would recommend a good, high quality puppy food. If your puppy is going to be a larger dog then I always recommend feeding a puppy food that is specifically a 'large breed' puppy food. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. Browny can eat any dog food diet that is formulated for puppies/growth, and ideally for large-breed dogs. Highly recommended brands include Royal Canin, Purina, and Hills, but other well known companies such as Pedigree are also appropriate. As long as the diet is not vegan, vegetarian or grain free, any puppy dog food diet should be OK. The dog food bag should have a feeding chart on it that outlines how much food Browny should be fed with each meal, based on her weight. I hope this is helpful!
