My unneutered dog has pain when humping. Is neutering the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 2 years old | 13 lbs

When even my dog humps something, he sometimes has pains but that happens only when he does that. He has no pain when he doesn’t hump. He is not neutered either. Is it because he is not neutered?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Jax may be humping due to being intact. Dogs can also hump if they are anxious or to show dominance. Neutering him may help curb this behavior. The pain may be due to friction and trauma. I would stop him as soon as he starts to hump. I hope this helps!
