My cat has blood in his drool and won't eat. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 10 lbs

I have a problem with bleeding from my cat's mouth -more specifically, blood in my cat's drool. He was fine until last night, acting and eating normally. This morning I noticed bloody saliva spots on the bed where he was sleeping, as well as blood on his chin. His gums don't appear to be inflamed, and he doesn't seem to be in any pain. He drank water normally this morning, but hasn't eaten anything today. Although he's sleeping now, he didn't appear to be particularly lethargic.

Hello. I am concerned that Snowball may have some issues with the tissues deeper in his mouth. There is a condition called stomatitis, which can cause bleeding, inflammation & significant pain. Your cat will be reluctant to eat as it hurts to swallow. Your veterinarian can discover the cause of the blood & hopefully make some recommendations for treating Snowball & hopefully get him feeling better soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
