Twice in the past few weeks, we have nearly lost Alfreda, our young canary to egg-laying. Once again, our canary appeared near death this evening from what seemed to be egg binding. As I massaged her lower abdomen, suddenly a considerable amount fluid burst out of her vent. Within an hour of this occurence, she recovered and began looking and acting normal. Questions: What was the fluid, and what can we do to prevent our canary from having to go through the trauma of attemptingvto lay eggs?

It's possible that an egg broke during the massage and that was the fluid released, or she may have been constipated and released a lot of stool at once, however it is best to schedule a veterinary exam to rule out any possible infection or other underlying cause, especially if she is having repeated egg-binding. Making sure she has access to calcium can help prevent egg-binding, either by offering "egg-food" treats, or cuttle bone. You can also remove any nesting material and nests in her environment to try and discourage breeding and egg laying.
