Puppy nails are sharp and hurting mom. How do I trim them safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 55 lbs

Loki had puppies 12 days ago, and there claws are pretty sharp and long, and I'm sure it must be hurting her to nurse them. Should I cut them? With nail clippers? How much should i cut? Will it ruin the end or how they grow? Thanks

These little claws can be damaging to the mom and cutting them would be helpful. It's also good to get them used to having their nails clipped at a young age. There is definitely a technique and landmarks to watch for when cutting them to avoid cutting the fleshy part of the nail. It's best to just trim the tips when first doing nail trims. Below is a link to a good demonstration on how to clip their nails. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDuQpRSKj4s I hope that helps and all goes well.
