My cat's breathing is fast after asthma steroid shot. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Devon Rex | Female | spayed | 15 years and 6 months old | 8.9 lbs

Today Pixie was diagnosed with feline asthma and was given a 20mg shot of depro steroid. That was this morning. Since then her respiration rate has been elevated. It’s usually between 25-30 breaths per minute, but now it’s up more like 35 or so. Should I be concerned? Is this common with the steroid shot? I’m worried she might be having a bad reaction. Thank you.

It's very likely she is having a bad reaction to the steroids that affects her breathing negatively, you need to give it a little more time, within 24-48 hours you should start seeing an improvement.
