What should I do if my dog ate chocolate brownies and seems fine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi! My dog ate about 2 squares of chocolate brownies while I was gone. My mistake of putting the brownies where she can reach them. Should I be concern about this? She seems fine and I'm not sure what time she ingested them. Thank you!

It's difficult to know how much the actual cocoa content is in this, but brownies tend to be more concentrated with cocoa powder, which is concerning for chocolate toxicity. It also depends on the size of the brownies. In order for you to determine the potential for toxicity, I recommend you estimate the amount of cocoa powder potentially ingested and use the chocolate toxicity calculator at this link: http://veterinaryclinic.com/chocolate/calc.html Signs of chocolate toxicity can be vomiting, hyper-excitability, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take her to a vet for treatment/monitoring as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure she has plenty of water and that you check her every four hours for any signs of toxicity. If she is better within 12 hours, then I would not worry about any signs of toxicity. I hope that helps and all is well with her.

It appears that he definitely experienced some signs of chocolate toxicity, but it doesn't appear to have progressed, so he's likely not going to have any life-threatening complications from the chocolate. However, he obviously feels bad and is going to have some gastrointestinal upset. The fact that he is drinking water is good, because dehydration is the biggest concern with profuse vomiting. You can help treat for dehydration by adding oral rehydration salts or pedialyte to his water. Without being able to examine him, I can't say for sure that he will be fine, so the best option is to have a vet examine him. Being lethargic and not interested in food is understandable right now, but if this goes on for longer than 24 hours, then it's best to take him to the vet. He may be having other complications or needs IV fluids in order to get him back to normal. I hope that helps and Ghost gets better soon.

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Pip eating the brownie. Not knowing the size of the brownie, how much chocolate was in it, & if it was made with milk or dark chocolate, it is impossible to say if she received enough chocolate to be worrisome. Chocolate can cause vomiting & diarrhea, or, the sugar & fats in the brownie are causing her upset. At this point in time, just continue to watch her. If her appetite does not improve by tomorrow, it might be best to have your veterinarian check on her. Hopefully, all will be just fine by then. Take care & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Being hyper and having excessive thirst are both signs of chocolate toxicity, and given that Rainey was showing these signs, it's best that she sees a vet immediately. It can take up to 24 hours for additional signs of chocolate toxicity to occur, and she does need treatment for it now. I can't say for sure if she will be ok because I can't see her in person, and having her evaluated and treated by a vet is the best way to know if she will be ok. Please bring Rainey into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now.
