My puppy's missing nail is bleeding. What to do until the vet?

I just adopted a puppy yesterday and when I got him home I noticed he was missing his nail. The nail and quick are gone. He doesn’t want it to be touched. It started to bleed today and I’m concerned. My vet can’t see him until Monday and I want to make sure it won’t be or doesn’t look infected.

Hello. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is hard to give you much advice without seeing the nail. All I can tell you without a photo is that if you are worried you should take Chubbers to any vet that can fit you in now. Chances are he will be just fine until Monday. If your vet thinks he needs antibiotics they will prescribe them at that time. I doubt 2 days is going to make a huge difference. In the meantime you could soak the foot in an Epsom salt bath for 10 minutes, dry the foot well and then apply a thin layer of Neosporin. You can do this twice a day until you can get him to your vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
