Dog has a red/yellow sore on side, keeps licking. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Parson Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 6 years and 5 months old

Hi, Two nights ago I noticed a long red/yellow sore on my dog's side. She is a Parson's Terrier. It is obviously sore as she keeps trying to lick it. It initially looked like a burn, but there is nothing she could have burned herself on. I am really worried about it and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I am worried it's something more serious than a superficial scratch or burn. Please could you look at the photo and let me know your thoughts? Thank you, Sabina

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tilly! It looks like a scrape that is trying to heal. I think ultimately she will be fine but she needs to stop licking. I would put on an E-collar to prevent licking for the next 5-7 days and apply a triple antibiotic ointment on the area twice daily. Once it is healed you can take the E-collar off. I hope this helps and I wish Tilly the best!
