My terminal African Grey has heavy breathing. Is he suffering and ready for euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | 22 years and 1 month old

My African Grey has a tumor in his abdominal cavity & is terminal. He recently started breathing heavy enough that I can see it from across the room & I can hear it when I am near him. He is also making a "ka" sound. I have taken him per vet recommendation for euthanasia several times but he perks up every time we get there. Please tell me if it sounds like he is suffering & that it may be time for euthanasia based on his new breathing problems? My vet says any decision is ok but not ok w/ answe

Most animals perk up when they go places due to adrenaline that temporarily makes them feel better and stronger. This is not a fair judgement or indicator of 'if the time is right' and should not influence your decision. IF there is trouble breathing, then that is a major change and concerning. You know him best, if he is suffering and seems exhausted at home due to trying to breath, then it is time for euthanasia. I am so sorry.
