My cat pees on blankets. How do I stop this inappropriate urination?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

Olivia has been Peeing outside of the litter box. Anytime you leave a blanket laying out on the couch or on the ground, she pees on it. I'm not sure how to get her to stop. I have never caught her in the act. So I'm not sure when or why she is doing it

Please make sure the litter box is scooped daily and cleaned completely once a week. I would also have her checked to make sure she doesn’t have a urinary tract infection which can cause inappropriate urination. Cats often will urinate on blankets, towels, bath mats and laundry so please don’t leave anything like that around. You can also confine her to a smaller part of the house until she gets retrained. This sounds like a behavioral problem not medical but to be safe I would recommend running a urine sample. If there is no urinary tract infection I would make sure you have 2 litter boxes and they are cleaned daily. I would always make sure the blankets are folded and put away that way she doesn't have the opportunity to make this mistake. I would also recommend discussing behavioral meds with your veterinarian.
