Should I visit my dog in the hospital? Will it upset or help him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 13 years and 11 months old | 5.4 lbs

My dog was admitted to my local emergency hospital last night due to complications from Kidney Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension. He is staying overnight again tonight and possibly tomorrow night as well. My question is...is it better to not visit him or to visit him? I don't want to upset him. I'm not sure if a visit would upset him (since I'd be leaving again) or boost his spirits. In your experience with your patients. Are visits benefitial or do they just cause upset when they end?

Poor guy. I hope he gets well and is able to come home soon. Pet visits are absolutely welcomed and encouraged. Cats aren't as attached as dogs, but they do enjoy visits from their owners and this can boost morale and also the health of the pet has been shown to increase when there is an emotional tie to a present owner. I would encourage you to visit your pet Memi everyday he is there, twice daily if possible, and I hope he gets well soon!
