What should I do about my cat's painful, pus-filled neck bump?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Himalayan | Male | neutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

Hello I have a flame point himalayan and noticed a round hard bump on the back of his neck slightly larger than a pencil eraser. It has little black spots and has white pus. The pus squeezed out and it is painful. Could this be a wart? Stacy

No, warts do not appear like this and are non-painful. This is an infection under the skin. These can happen through puncture wounds (like when another animal bites), or if something like a thorn gets stuck under the skin. It's best to have a vet check him out sometime soon. They will be able to identify the source of the infection and give the necessary treatment. For now, it's best to flush the wound using a syringe or other dispensing device with warm water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because cats tend to hate water. I recommend having someone help you with this and wrapping Kobe in a towel to make sure the wound gets flushed well. Below is a link to a demonstration of how to restrain him well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqmSvUGxBvA I hope that helps and Kobe gets better soon.
