My dog is licking pyometra discharge. Is it safe to allow her?

Is it okay for my dog to lick & clean the discharge from her Pyometra or should I prevent her from doing so?

It's usually not harmful to their stomachs, but is filled with bacteria, so has the potential to cause issues in the GI tract. It's best to keep her from licking it, but that would require her to wear an E-collar (aka the cone of shame). I hope that helps and she gets better soon.

If she has a pyometra she needs to see a vet. This will not resolve without treatment. It is not great that she is licking the discharge as it is an infection but I don't think it will necessarily hurt her. Please try to get her to a vet for an exam as soon as you can. Best wishes.

My dog 9 yrs old had her pyometra surgery on 9 July n she is still passing this discharge.is it normal?she is not interested in food but not off her food.
No, that is not normal. She should be put on broad spectrum antibiotics. There may be an infection in the uterine tissue that is remaining in the abdomen (stump pyometra). A second surgery may be needed to remove the infective tissue. The bloodwork shows a high white blood cell count indicating infection. Some of her liver enzymes are mildly elevated but I don't think they are significant at this time. She needs to be evaluated for a stump pyometra. Your poor pup! If she isn't spayed, I would be very concerned that she has a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and it would cause a white discharge as well as vomiting. It sounds like your vet may have been suspicious she had a pyometra and tried treating it medically with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Unfortunately the medical route often isn't successful, and surgery is needed to treat it. This means spaying her. I would take her back into the vet immediately, as this is a medical emergency. It is uncommon for discharge to persist this long and a culture and sensitivity test to identify any unusual bacteria may be worth considered and a change of antibiotic may be required if it is resistant to what she is currently on

It's possible that you may need to refill your antibiotic prescription. Your doctor may be able to do this over the phone. It's possible that the original prescription or infection may have cause an imbalance in Hooka's stomach. If you notice any vomiting and diarrhea hasn't gone away over the next 24 hours, you might consider offering her a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice until it subsides.

My dog keep licking his private area and now there is discharge/white. I think he has an infection. Is there any home remdey that I can try first before taking him to vet which I don't have the money right now?
You could try to clean the area with a mild soap and water. You can put a cone collar on his to prevent licking so he doesn't make the infection worse. If it's a urinary tract infection, it likely won't get better without oral antibiotics but you can try to encourage him to drink more water to help flush him out. I hope this helps.

It's a little difficult to see for certain in the picture, but I do see a fluid filled structure in the photo near the urinary bladder that certainly could be the uterus. In your final picture the discharge on the ground does not look what I would typically expect from vaginitis. You may want to get a third opinion from a veterinarian if you're concerned about going forward with surgery. If it is a uterine infection it is unlikely to clear with antibiotics alone and even if it does the infection returns with the next heat cycle, so I typically recommend surgery whenever I am concerned about a pyometra.

Pyometra is a serious and life threatening (if not treated) Infection of the uterus. Surgery after stabilization of clinical condition is definitively what is needed to save her life. Infection can be potentially spread and become systemic. Weakness is probably due to high temperature and to generalized illness. I am not sure if your veterinarian suggested that, but surgical treatment is needed. Hi, if the liquid is coming out from her genital area, it could either be an infection (very common in older female dogs that have not been neutered) or if your dog is young could be juvenile vaginitis. She is grooming the area in order to keep it clean, I would not worry about this. I would recommend to have your dog checked over as is she has an infection she will need treatment ASAP. Generally speaking, a dog Cleo's age is in high risk for developing Pyometra (uterine infection). The white discharge could be a sign that it is starting. I would strongly recommend having her spayed ASAP before it develops into something that is life threatening.
