My kitten licked queso. Is it toxic? Should I go to the emergency vet?

Hi there and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! A few licks of garlic dip with garlic powder in it should not be concern. Garlic powder, while still not okay for cats or dogs to consume, is not as problematic as ingesting actual garlic gloves would be and while consuming a cup of the garlic dip may be a problem, a few licks should not cause an issue. I don't think there is any real cause to see a vet right away on this one, but do monitor him at home for any signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, decreased appetite, etc and please do see a vet if you notice any abnormalities. It is unlikely that Pepper will get poisoned by a few licks of broth with a few crushed onion pieces in it. There is no need to take her to an emergency vet. She would have to ingest a lot of onion in order to get anemia from it. Should she get lethargic or get white gums, have your vet give her an exam, but as I said, it is very unlikely that Pepper will get ill.

Hello, I'm sorry to hear that Luna got into the pan with onions. Generally, she would need to eat a few mouthfuls of pure onion to get a toxic amount. A few licks of oil in a pan with onion in it wouldn't cause problems, except maybe some GI distress from excess fat. If she did ingest a toxic amount of onions, it would cause anemia which results in weakness and lethargy. These plants include garlic, onions, leeks, scallions, chives and shallots. If your pet eats one of these products, red blood cells can be damaged, resulting in the cells not being able to carry oxygen. Ingestion can also cause anemia (low red blood cell count) and, in severe cases, the anemia may lead to internal organ damage, organ failure or even death. If she is acting fine then I wouldn't rush to the ER. Onion toxicity isn't immediate and it usually is when they eat a lot of there is chronic exposure.
