Why are my dog's nails short? Is it bad growth or vitamin deficiency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old

Why don’t his nails grow long like others dogs? My freind always has to clip her dogs nails because they get really long but Marley’s are like short stumps they never grow long they always stay the same shortness does he have bad growth? Is he missing some vitamins that make nails grow?

If he walks on concrete or a hard surface then he may be wearing them down on his own, especially if the nails look normal. You could have your vet take a look at his nails if you are concerned there is a problem.
