My dog's limping 2 weeks, not using paw. Should I get an X-ray?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 70 lbs

My dog is a 7 year old shepherd/pit mix and was rough housing with my 4 year old dog and got too rowdy. He has now been limping for 2 weeks, he carries the foot and doesn't put any pressure on it at all. We have felt around and tested his leg to see which area is causing him to limp but he doesn't react to anything. He does't seem to be in pain, is there something else that could be going on internally? Should I take him in for an xray or let it heal on its own?

I would recommend taking Jax to a veterinarian. The veterinarian will perform a physical examination and then they may take an xray depending on what they feel and see. If they do not find anything they can provide Jax with a good anti-inflammatory to help with the pain. I hope Jax feels better soon and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
