Puppy has diarrhea, straining, and frequent night trips. Vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 2 days old | 13 lbs

My 8m puppy has diarrhoea for 3 days now. He even wakes up in the night (which he never did) and asks to go out several times a night. He sits down multiple times straining and some times he can’t even pass anything. Should i be worried and see a vet? He’s lively, no bloating, good appetite and on grain free kibble and I’ve been giving him 1:1 rice today. Could it be an intestinal obstruction? He’s been treated from parasites last month.

Hi and thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This does not sound like an obstruction, sinc he is still eating and not having any vomiting episodes. It sounds like an enteritis or colitis (inflamation of the small or large intestines), more likely colitis because you are seeing him strain. This can be caused by intestinal parasites (even if he was recently treated) or it can be caused by stress to his gut. I would recommend taking him in to your vet soon for much needed antibiotics and probilotics. You can try some probiotics (over the counter Culturelle is my only recommendation for OTC products) now, some added fiber (1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin, NOT the pie filling) and a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to see if that helps. However, a vet visit should be able to sort things out for Barni and get his intestinal flora back to normal. Best wishes andt take care.
