Should pregnant mares get rabies vaccine before or after foaling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Farm Animal | Horse | Female | unspayed | 1000 lbs

I have two broodmares that are both due to foal on March 23rd. They are due for their annual rabies vaccine in mid-February. Is it safe to give them their rabies shot now or better to wait until after the foals are born?

The AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) recommends vaccinating pregnant mares against rabies approximately 4-6 weeks before foaling. You can read their recommendations at the link below. https://aaep.org/guidelines/vaccination-guidelines/core-vaccination-guidelines/rabies
