My dog has a false pregnancy. Should I let her mother her toy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a 4 year old chihuahua and poodle mix who I believe is having a pseudo pregnancy. She has become overly attached to a stuffed animal and stays in a corner with it for most of the day. She has even become aggressive over the toy and isn’t eating as she should because she doesn’t want to leave it. I have taken the toy multiple times, but every time I do, she cries throughout the night. Should I let her mother the toy or take it away? (she isn’t swollen or producing milk)

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor girl! I’d allow her to have the toy. Bring the water and food to her. If she is experiencing a false pregnancy then it should resolve in 2-3 months from the end of her heat cycle. I hope this helps and I wish you both the best!
