My new puppy is tiny and growing slowly. Is this normal for a runt?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 55 lbs

My dog just had 7 puppies and they are 9 days old now, they all seem to be growing at a steady pace, except for one who is much smaller. She drinks a lot and I think she grows, but very slowly. Is she just the runt? Should I be concerned? Thanks

Hello. There always seems to be one puppy that just seems to struggle, but this does not mean anything is wrong. As long as you see the mother dog nursing her, cleaning her, & not ignoring or pushing this puppy to the side, then she will be fine. Often these slow starters will easily catch up to their littermates in time. Just keep a close eye on everyone. Buying a small digital kitchen scale & taking weights 2 times a week will make sure everyone is growing. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
