My dog ate puppy pads. Should I worry about obstruction after surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dalmatian | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 50 lbs

My 1yo dalmatian stole and shredded 2 puppy pads off my counter yesterday while I was at work. I couldn't tell how much he had eaten because they were shredded into tiny pieces. This morning he started retching like he was going to throw up, but he burped and then hasn't done it since. He is eating, drinking, and playing fine and had a normal poop this morning. He JUST recovered from a resection and anastomosis from eating a toy. They also did a gastropexy to prevent bloat. Should I be worried?

Thanks for your question. It sounds like you have a naughty boy on your hands. At this point, it sounds like he isn't currently having symptoms. If he stops eating or starts vomiting, you will want to seek veterinary attention. Unfortunately, there are some dogs that are repeat offenders and continue to get themselves into trouble. If not already, he may need to be crated when alone, with nothing but a metal water bowl in the crate with him. I hope it makes it through this and stays out of trouble for a while.

It sounds like he isn't having any issues, but I would call your vet and possibly get him in for a recheck exam as soon as possible, sooner if he starts showing signs of illness. Keep in mind his counter-surfing habits and keep EVERYTHING shut up or put away and if you have other family members, get them to help. Some dogs just don't learn from eating things they shouldn't and I have seen dogs got through surgery multiple times for swallowing non-food items and getting obstructions as a result.
