Giving second Drontal dose for tapeworms: Is it safe? Side effects?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 9 years and 1 month old | 9 lbs

Hi there! My outdoor fecal tested positive for tapeworm. She had drontal 3 weeks ago and I'm supposed to give her the second dose . If the tapeworm was wiped out with the first dose , is there any harm with the second treatment ? I just don't want to give her any unnecessary meds. Are there side effects with drontal ? Thank you

The reason for the second deworming 3 weeks later is to kill any tapeworms that were still immature at the last deworming and were not yet sensitive to the dewormer or if she has gotten infected again since the last deworming. Drontal is a very safe medication with very few side effects since it only affects the parasites in the GI tract. I am attaching a link to a handout on Drontal below including a discussion of side effects. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=531 I hope that was helpful and answered your questions.
