Is human trazodone safe for my dog, even if it's the same dose?

Can I give my dog trazadone that was prescribed for a human? The pills are the same dose.

No, it is never recommended to give your dog a medication that was prescribed for a human. Even though the pills are the same dose, it may be the wrong medication for Scout or it may not be safe to give to him. Only give him medication prescribed by the vet for a specific medical condition. I hope this helps!

Trazodone has a very wide dosage range due to the variation of an individual dog's response to this medication. While Alice's dose is near the upper dosage range at 13.5mg/kg, it is still within a normal dosage range. I'm taking my dog to the vet tomorrow and they recommend giving him 5 100mg tablets of trazadone?!? That seems like alot....he is a boxer mix and weighs 62 lbs.
HI, I think there may have been some mistake in the dosage they told you to give. Trazadone is usually dosed in 100mg pills and large dogs are given up to 200mg about 2 hours before the vet visit to calm him down. I would hesitate to give him more than that. I would start with 200mg and speak to your vet again to make sure the dosage they want to give him is actually 5 tablets and what their reasoning would be. It is important to give the drug enough time to work which usually peaks in about 2 hours so if you do that, 200mg should work fine. Good luck I hope this helps!

My dog was prescribed 100mg of Trazodone as needed for separation anxiety/sedation. I've been reading about normal dosages in dogs, and this seems like quite a bit to start off with. Is 100mg too much for a 20 lb puppy?
The dose range for Trazodone in dogs is very wide. For use as needed, published doses range from 2.2-14 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) of body weight per day. Based on her current 20 pound body weight, Luna has been prescribed 10.1 mg/kg, which is a perfectly acceptable dose. There are limited studies of the use in Trazodone in dogs, but it seems to be a very safe medication and anecdotal doses have been safely reported in excess of the published doses mentioned above. Since Luna is still a young, growing puppy, expect her dose to increase over time as she gets older and bigger. I hope this helps and that all goes well in managing Luna's separation anxiety!

The vet told me to give 1-3 100 mg trazondone to my 56 lb dog
That dose range is acceptable. The low end of dosing would be about 1.5 100 mg tablets for issues such as anxiety from fireworks, anxiety going to the vet’s, hyperactivity after a surgery where being calmer would be ideal. Unless your dog is super aggressive and the trazadone was prescribed prior to a visit for the safety of the veterinary staff, I would start with one 100 mg tablet and see how much of an effect it has on Ivy for the purpose indicated. If she doesn’t not seem appreciably calmer 30 min after the first tablet, you can give a second 30 min later.

Is Trazadone 50mg too much for my 23.5 lb dog? I picked up today to have on hand as needed for storm anxiety.
50 mg is a very typical, commonly-prescribed dose of trazodone for a dog of this size. I actually have a 20 lb dog who takes trazodone for separation anxiety, and this is the same dose that he takes :) As long as your vet has prescribed this dose of trazodone for Snickers, it should be just fine to give it to her as needed for storms.

It depends on what sedatives the veterinarian is planning to use. Do not give this medication without the approval of the veterinarian. There can be potential drug interactions. Call your veterinarian and they will tell you what to do. I hope this helps.

My 3 pound dog was prescribed 25 mg trazodone for anxiety yesterday. Vet is closed and I'm fearful the dose will be too high. What do you think?
It has a very high variable dose range and each pet responds differently to it. You can always give 1/2 if you are nervous for the first dose to see how Lilly responds. If you see no change then you know you have to give the entire dose.

Is 100 mg of Trazodone too much for a 20 lb puppy?

The dose for a 20lb puppy would be approximately 25mg every 12 hours with a max dose of 50mg. 100mg would be too high of a dose but would likely not cause significant problems. A dog with too high of a dose of Trazodone may exhibit sedation, lethargy and incoordination when walking. I hope this helps answer your question. I have a 40-45 pound dog that does not like to get nails done. She can get nippy and not easy to hold. I too her to a low income vet clinic, they couldn't do her. They sent me home with Trazodone. They want me to give her 4 - 100 mg (400 mg) an hour
If your dog has never had this drug before I recommend giving one and then gradually giving more until the desired effect is reached. For example if you give one and there is no effect after 30 to 45 minutes then give another pill. You can repeat this up to 400 mg. Is easier to get more if your dog does not get sedated versus if they get over sedated from a high dose. 400 mg is a safe dose but starting low with increasing is also an acceptable route.
