My unneutered cat won't come home for his leg injury. Is it mating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 10 months old

My cat has the habit of getting out for night strolls in the neighborhood. For a few days, he has been staying out most of the time. In fact, he stayed out for 2 days, returned and had some fish and again went out making mating calls. I'm concerned about him staying out for so long as he might get into fights with stray cats. Is this mating behavior? What's even more concerning is that he had a minor leg injury and we haven't been able to take him to the vet as he is staying out all the time.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Gooty isn’t neutered then he likely is mating. Cats that go outdoors are more likely to suffer trauma from cars or fight with other cats and get wounds. Neutering may help the wandering. It probably won’t prevent fighting. He should stay updated on his vaccines and be dewormed regularly. Next time he comes in, keep him inside until you can get him to the Vet to have his injury evaluated. I hope this helps and I wish Gooty the best!
