Newborn puppy's dark, tarry poop: Is it melena? Home remedies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 7 days old | 0.375 lbs

Hello, I have an orphaned newborn puppy about a week old. Someone had thrown her outside in the snow with her sibling and when we rescued her, one of them had already passed and the one we have now was frozen. We got its temperature back to normal and the last three days she has been fine. Great even, only concern is her stool. It's a dark brown color, nearly black, and it of a tarry consistency. We have considered Melena. Any home remedies that helps? We absolutely can't afford a vet right now.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Due to Destiny's age there aren't any home remedies if she truly has melena. It might just be residual from shock secondary to hypothermia. If she is acting fine otherwise I would hope her stool will return to a more normal color. Puppy poop is tarry and can be darker in color. It doesn't look like adult stool and hers wouldn't look like a puppy who is nursing. If she begins to get sick the best thing would be to take her to a Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Destiny the very best!
