Why is my dog vomiting Baytril for anal gland infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 10 years and 3 months old | 12.5 lbs

My 12.5 pound dog had his anal glands expressed at the vet's and green discharge came out. Cytology was positive for neutrophils. He was prescribed 136mg of Baytril daily for 3 weeks. He has taken 2 days of the medication vomited 6-8 hours afterwards on each day. Is this considered an appropriate dosage for him?

There is a range for the dose of Baytril depending on what we are treating with the antibiotic. C is on the high end of the dosage range which does sometimes make it more likely that we will see side effects commonly associated with antibiotics (including vomiting). I would contact your veterinarian to advise them about C's vomiting and ask for their recommendation. They may adjust his dose, change his antibiotic, or recommend an anti-nausea medication. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that C feels better soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
