Is my dog sleeping too much? Could it be depression or an illness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 70 lbs

My 2 year old Amstaff sleeps most of the day and night. My trainer thinks he’s depressed but he does get his moments of playing and running around. How can I tell if my trainer is right?

Jack is very handsome! I would have him seen by a vet. There could be a medical reason behind him being so lethargic, such as a systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. A health check with the vet is best because they are the ones who can rule in or rule out a medical reason behind this behavior. I would have him seen by a vet on Monday or Tuesday. Good luck, I hope this helps!
