Is my dog sleeping too much? Could it be depression or an illness?

My 2 year old Amstaff sleeps most of the day and night. My trainer thinks he’s depressed but he does get his moments of playing and running around. How can I tell if my trainer is right?

Jack is very handsome! I would have him seen by a vet. There could be a medical reason behind him being so lethargic, such as a systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. A health check with the vet is best because they are the ones who can rule in or rule out a medical reason behind this behavior. I would have him seen by a vet on Monday or Tuesday. I would have Loki seen by a vet this week. While it can be that situations can cause a dog to seem to be depressed, such as the loss of a companion animal in the home, they don't actually get depressed in the way humans do. Typically this lethargy can be a sign of a medical illness, which would also cause him to not eat. The best thing for him is to have him seen by a vet for a health check in the next day or two. My dog is not eating or drinking for past 5 days... he is less active and always sleeping
I'm sorry to hear that Jack is feeling so poorly. Not eating or drinking for 5 days is a very long time, and my main concern is that he has become significantly dehydrated. Some possible causes of Jack's lethargy, loss of appetite and not drinking include a virus, liver disease, infectious diseases, pancreatitis, cancer, among others. At this point, the best thing you can do is to take Jack to his vet for an exam and diagnostic testing (likely CBC, chemistry, urinalysis, abdominal x-rays and/or ultrasound) to try to get to the bottom of things. From there, his vet will be able to formulate the best course of treatment. I hope that Jack feels better soon!

At 3years of age he would generally expected to be more active but every dogs character is different and some are very placid. If his behavior has changed over the last 3 months I strongly recommend a full health check by your vet to rule out medical or painful conditions which may be reducing his mobility

When a pet has some kind of change in behvaior that last for more than a day or two, followed by decreased appetite or some other symptoms, then it could very well be a sign of an underlying illness and you should get her checked by your vet soon. However, if she is just displaying odd behavior and still eating, drinking, urinating, and defecating normally, she likely is just bored. It sounds like Knox is lethargic. Lethargy is a very general sign of illness, and it could be caused by systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. Because this behavior has been ongoing for the past couple of days, I would have him seen by the vet in the morning for a health check. I hope this helps!

My dog is shaking on and off, and acting lethargic
Poor Jackson! He could be shaking from pain, which would also cause him to be lethargic. At his age, it could be that he is suffering from arthritis. I would rest him tonight, and then have Jackson seen by a vet first thing tomorrow if he's still shaking and acting lethargic. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and can treat him for them.

My Labrador is not well from long time I consulted many vets.He sleeps all day nowadays didn't response well just eat food and sleep.had blood test also they were normal.now he had started staring walls in the morning time only.he is eating properly.
It is possible that he has Lyme disease which is transmitted by tick bites and can cause joint pain/stiffness and difficulty moving. An Accuplex or 4DX heartworm /Lyme blood test is recommended to rule this out. A Thyroid T4 blood test is also recommended to rule out hypothyroidism which can present as lethargy. Chest and Abdominal xrays to rule out cancer or other major abnormalities as well as a fecal exam to rule out intestinal parasites and a urinalysis to rule out kidney/bladder issues that may not be picked up on regular screening bloodwork could also provide helpful information. Jack is adorable! And a bit young for arthritis pain to be the cause of his symptoms. Good luck!

Hello! I'm doing well today, and I'm sorry that you are so worried about Kamilo. Lethargy is a very common symptoms of many illnesses such as a systemic illness, infection, inflammation, kidney disease, liver disease, injury, or cancer. I'm not sure if he's eating or drinking, but if he is, I would keep an eye on him for now. Should he still be lethargic in another 24-48 hours, take him into the vet for a check up. If he develops other signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stops eating or drinking, take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

If the lethargy continues then you should be worried and he should be examined by a vet to determine if there is a problem. Your vet can do a full examination to look for abnormalities and then determine if treatment is needed. He could have a infection that is causing him to be lethargic. Your vet can also run lab-work, if needed, to help diagnose.

I'm sorry Harvey isn't feeling well at the moment! The heat could be making him lethargic, so I would keep him in a cool dark place during the day, and make sure he has access to plenty of fresh water. It could also be due to a systemic illness, infection, or inflammation, so I do think a full blood count would be a good idea just to make sure everything is ok. I will give you some resources that may help you afford this test below. For now, keep an eye on Harvey, and if he continues to be lethargic over the next 24-48 hours, or stops eating then I would have him seen by a vet again. I hope this helps!
