My dog eats more after spay. Is increased appetite normal or should I feed more?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 9 lbs

I have three yorkies and they eat twice a day. Nine days ago I spayed Maïa, she is the oldest yorkie. The last couple of days they have been eating more than usual. They never used to finish their meal and now they devour it. Should I feed them more food? I have not changed their food or anything else, everything is as it always has been. What could be the cause? Is it normal?

Thanks for the question. No, it isn't normal to have an increased appetite after being spayed. It is possible they are eating more due to stress, but I can't say for sure. As long as their weight is stable, I do not recommend increasing the food. It may only be a temporary increase in appetite, but you will want to monitor for any other changes. I hope this helps.
