Dog bite on neck: Can I clean my dog's small wound at home or vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old | 53 lbs

My dog was attacked briefly by a dog yesterday. Today I noticed that he has a small patch of fur clumped together by dried blood on his neck. I cut off the patch to investigate and he has a small red spot on his neck (about the size of the tip of a pinky finger or pen cap). I didn't see any puss, but it looked moist. He hasn't had any other physical symptoms since the attack. I'm wondering if he needs to go the vet or if I can clean the wound at home. He's a 65-lb 8-year-old Blue Heeler mix.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Takoda! I would try to shave all the fur away from the area and check closely for other wounds. Then clean the skin with water and a mild soap. Avoid hydrogen peroxide as it can damage the skin. Then apply a triple antibiotic ointment twice daily. If there is a large full thickness gash or puncture it is best to have Takoda seen by a Vet to see if surgery is warranted or oral antibiotics. I hope this helps and I wish Takoda the best!
