My cat is leaving hard poop nuggets randomly. Is it constipation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 9 months old | 12.6 lbs

Cat has been leaving mysterious poop nuggets randomly. It's not getting caught in his fur and it happens at random times. I have read that it may be constipation so today I have him wet food. I laid down a scratching pad and he scratched it, laid on it, and he got up and there was a poop nugget on it. What is going on??

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I have seen cats that are constipated leave hard pieces of stool randomly over the house. I would have your Vet do an exam and take a belly X-ray to evaluate for constipation. Constipation is a symptom of an underling condition: sudden dehydration from an illness, kidney disease or intestinal disease (IBD or intestinal cancer). I hope this helps and I wish Midnight the best!
