How to keep my kitten from jumping on the dining table during meals?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 months and 29 days old | 5.5 lbs

How can we get our kitten to stay off the dining table? She runs if we catch her at it because we have trained her to know it is wrong. But if we are actually having a meal, she jumps up continuously. None of our previous 4 cats did this. There is an air of defiance about her when she does this, as if she's daring us to get her off. Her eyes get wide and wild looking.

I recommend a Scat Mat. It gives a mild static shock when the cat steps on it. I like it because you can lay it on the table and it will correct the cat when you aren’t even there. You can purchase one at PetCo. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you get answers to your veterinary questions.
