My Great Dane is gagging but not throwing up. Could it be bloat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old

My 2.5 year old Great Dane has been making the sound like she needs to throw up but doesn’t. She only makes the noise once really loud. Then sounds like she’s reverse sneezing for 30-45 seconds after. Then she’s fine for about 45 minutes or so then does it again. She threw up undigested food two days in a row last week after she ate but hasn’t done that since Thursday. What do you suggest I do? Do you have an idea of what could be wrong?

I would recommend taking Avery to an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. It sounds like you could be describing an unproductive retch which is a sign of gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV) also known as bloat. GDV is very common in Great Danes and can quickly become fatal if not addressed right away. Of course it's also possible that she is simply gagging or coughing but in my opinion it is much better to be safe and have a veterinarian rule out GDV. They may recommend an x-ray to look at Avery's stomach position.
