Dog's mouth swollen, but he's active. Can I wait for the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 90 lbs

We noticed our dogs mouth is suddenly swollen... he's been fine, we noticed it and got a video of it.. he's eating a lot, wagging his tail, and let's us touch it just fine... he's still active and doesn't moan or whine when we touch it... it's sleet and freezing rain here so we're nervous to get out on the road... but if need be... we can hopefully make it somewhere...

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Dozer! How old is Dozer? Unfortunately I am very concerned that the area is a cancerous mass. It could be an abscess (infection). Common masses in the mouth are: melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, finrosarcoma. As long as Dozer is acting normal you can wait until the weather improves tomorrow or Tuesday. I highly recommend getting him seen as soon as you can. I hope this helps and I wish Dozer the very best!
