My kitten has a lip ulcer. Is it a rodent ulcer and how long to heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 28 days old | 8 lbs

My kitten was hospitalised few days ago. He couldnt keep anything down so because of dehydration he had to get IV fluids. Was there for overnight but he refused eat and acted very stressed so the vet sent him home on antibiotics . Vomitin gone but next day I noticed a herpes like ulcer on his upper lip. The vet reckons it's a stress related rodent ulcer and it will go away on its own. I attached photos of it to get a second opinion about it also to find out how long it takes to go away. Thanks

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry that Max has not been feeling well. The lesion in the photo could be a rodent ulcer but I have honestly never seen one in a kitten this young. My first thought would be that this is a calicivirus lesion. Does he have any lesions/ulcers inside his mouth? Here is a link to an article about calicivirus in cats: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/feline-calicivirus-infection Many rodent ulcers do not go away on their own without treatment with steroids which is not indicated to do since he has been ill. Most calicivirus lesions will go away on their own within a few weeks. Hope this helps. If you have more questions feel free to post again. Best wishes.
