Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 10 months old | 82 lbs

7 year old neutrred pitbull mix on Apoquel for 4 to 5 months for generalized pruritus. He developed a half dollar size red, rough wound devoid of hair on his chest. Is this demodectic mange from the Apoquel?

Apoquel is an immunosuppressive agent that can allow endogenous bacteria and parasites such as mites to set up infection in the skin. The only way to know if this lesion is due to mange is for your veterinarian to perform a skin scraping and cytology to diagnose the manage. If it is mange, he/she can recommend appropriate treatment. If it is not mange Jake will likely need some antibiotics to address the infection.

Demodic mange is a skin mite, it cannot be caused by the Apoquel. it's not possible fro me to tell you what is causing this new lesion, you will have to take Jake to the vet in order to get it checked and tested.
